D-day is name of the date, June 6 1994, that the Allied forces began thier invasion of Europe. They decided to attack five beaches: Sword, Juno, Gold, Utah and Omaha. The Landings were the landing operations of the Allied invasion of Normandy, also known as Operation Neptune and Operation Overlord. The attack had three phases.
1.Land troops and equiptment on the other side of enemy lines to prevent tanks and troops from the beaches.external image 02%20-%20D-Day%20map.gif
2.Have bombers bomb the beaches to take out bunkers, pill-boxes and create crators for the troops to take cover in.

3. land troops at beaches to take the beaches and push inland. British and Canadian troops to tke Caen if possible.
The U.S. 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, numbering 13,000 paratrooper had trouble landing. Many were shot on the way down and more had bad parachutes. Omaha was the most heavily fortified beach, with high bluffs defended by funneled mortars, machine guns, and artillery. Many things went wrong and the U.S. soldiers suffered the highest casualty count. While the U.S. troops on Utah beach sufferred the lightest casualties, only 197 troops died. No wonder they code named it Utah beach.
Despite many setbacks D-day was successful. In less then a week Paris had been liberated.external image 1944_NormandyLST.jpg
